Halloween party

There was a Halloween party at the school for the kids.
Trinity is a little gypsy, or...hippy? Anyway, she is as cute as can be in the cakewalk. She won some horrible cupcakes that made her extremely hyper!
Grace is an angel. She won bingo about four times, and got lots of candy!
Heather is a flower fairy! In the background is Mary Margaret dressed up as a doll. Sweet.
Eva put on her own riding gear and went to the party as a dirt biker.
Thomas went to the party as a soldier. How many years in a row is this, Tom?
Felicity had a different Halloween party to go to, and is dressed as a mime. I love this costume!

desserts

Here are some of the desserts we had this week.
My mum gave me some pastry that she made, and I put together this lemon tart with it.
Thanks, mum.
I guess I could call this a chocolate pistachio tart? The pastry is made with pistachios, the filling is a chocolate ganache, and I topped it with whipped cream and sprinkled it with chopped pistachios. It was pretty good.Apparently I volunteered to bake some cakes for a Halloween party at the school. The kids were all hoping to win one in the cake walk. I thought that was pretty funny. Well, Mary Margaret did
win one of our cakes! Luckily she didn't win the one with chocolate sprinkles on it - Gregory was teasing me that it looked like the chocolate sprinkles were ants, crawling all over it. (ew.)

Help

I cannot stop myself from taking pictures of food! (is there a support group for that?) I got home late on Wednesday night with nothing prepared for dinner. So I dashed to the store and bought 2 roasted chickens (we are a big family, remember) pita bread, hummus, tzaziki, and veggies for a greek salad. Easy-peasey. Hi Heather.

Hola chicas.
Greg and I enjoyed a very nice dessert wine after our meal. mmm.

fondue fun

A cheese fondue is so great to have on a cold night! We have 4 of these small bowls set over small candles, so it's easy for the kids to share. We also had some sliced calabrese sausage, devilled eggs, and a salad to go with the meal.

apple crumble

One of my favorite kitchen tools has got to be this apple-peeler-corer-slicer thingy.
In just a few seconds, you have beautiful evenly sliced apples. Perfect for a pie, or an apple crumble.
The kids had this as their after school snack yesterday. mmm...

Jeepers creepers...

..where'd ya get those peepers?!
Felicity took this awesome picture of a raccoon on our balcony. The raccoons climb up the grape vines to eat the fruit. Sometimes there will be 5 or 6 little critters out there feasting on grapes. Love the glowing eyes!

petite treats

Our cookie jars are totally full right now! White chocolate macadamia nut, gingersnap, and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Pistachio tarts with chocolate ganache, and meringues. I made these petite treats to bring to a 'Latin Mass Meeting' on Saturday.

Squash soup

My friend Jana asked me if I knew a good recipe for squash soup. Well, here it is, Jana. We had this for dinner tonight and the kids want this in their lunch tomorrow! It is so yummy. I used a butternut squash and an acorn squash (it may also be called a Dutch squash?)
First, I roasted the two different squashes in a 425' oven for 45 mins. with some olive oil, onion, celery, garlic, salt, pepper, and some fresh thyme & rosemary from the garden. I put a bit of water in the bottom of the roasting pan, too.
In a large soup pot, I slowly cooked one onion in a bit of butter & olive oil, then added the baked squash (after peeling it, of course) Add a few chopped garlic cloves, 6 or so cups of chicken broth, and some more fresh thyme. Cook this until the squash is very soft. I used a hand blender to puree the soup, but you also do this in batches in the blender. Add about 1/2 cup of heavy cream, and more water, if you think the soup is too thick. Salt & pepper to taste.I roasted the seeds of the acorn squash in a bit of olive oil & sea salt, thinking I would use these little crunchy morsels to garnish the soup, BUT......(**shh**don't tell anyone)...i burnt them! Oops! Trinity and I ate the not-too-too-blackened-ones, and they were pretty good. However, I did use a cute cookie cutter to make star shapes with a bit of the butternut squash, then I sprinkled the stars with salt & pepper and browned them up in a bit of butter.
It's not that I don't have anything else to do, it's just that I would rather do this than fold laundry!
Here is Grace's soup. Oh, garnish with some fresh sage, too.So we had, squash soup, bread, salami, an assortment of cheese, and a salad.
We served the meal with a rose (picture an accent over the last e) wine from France. mmmThis was such a perfect autumn supper. Thanks for the great idea, Jana!
I was planning on making some caramelized pears served over vanilla ice cream
for dessert, but the supper was quite filling, so we had pomegranates instead.

Real men know how to cook quiche

Gregory is the best! He offered to cook dinner on Monday night for us. Mondays are crazy for me because I have to drive the kids to all sorts of activities after school, and need to be in several different places at the same time. Since I have not yet received the gift of bi-location, this can be quite tricky!
Gregory made a delicious quiche (actually 2 quiches) and a delicious butter lettuce salad.
The Zannata Damaso white wine went perfectly with this meal.
The quiche had bacon, swiss cheese, onion and broccoli. It was seriously the best quiche I have ever had. Greg is such a good cook. Thanks, Honey.

making bracelets

Heather, Grace and Cin-Cin were busy making bracelets today.
The girls got all the beads, ribbon and scissors out themselves. Good job, girls!
Heather and Cin-Cin.
Oooh, that looks nice, Gracie.
Very pretty, Heather!
'Hugs' and 'Monk' got some new jewelry today. Sweet.

chocolate mousse cake

Or should I say 'Chocolate chiffon cake filled with Bernard Callebaut milk chocolate mousse with white chocolate glaze' phew! I think it is kind of silly to list every single component in a cake title. They do that a lot in fancy-shmancy recipe magazines and what-not....what was I talking about? Ah, yes, chocolate! I had an order for a chocolate mousse birthday cake, and with the extra cake and mousse (Bernard Callebaut milk chocolate mousse, that is) I was able to make dessert for our family, too.
I didn't get any pictures of the actual birthday cake, so I thought I would show off the desserts that I put together for Gregory and myself.
BTW, happy birthday to our friend, Dave. He is the one who introduced Greg & me. Cheers, Dave!

rich, golden, full-bodied nectar

Gregory bought a beautiful ice cider for us to have as dessert one night. Here is a little excerpt from the back of the package: "Our bountiful apple orchard located on the southern slopes of Pinnacle Mountain provides the essential ingredient for this critically acclaimed, award-winning ice cider.""Over 80 hand picked apples go into the making of each bottle this rich, golden, and full-bodied nectar." **Ooh-la-la!**
It tasted divine! Plus, it looks pretty, too.

road trip

Greg & I drove down to Seattle to visit his cousin Dominic, his wife, Irina, & their little ones.
We brought Thomas, Grace & Trinity along with us. The older girls had a great time at Grama's house for the weekend.
Grace & Cin-Cin fell asleep in the car. Wake up, girls, we're almost there.
Grace, Cecilia, and Trinity are having a little tea party. O.K, so there isn't any tea, but they are dressed up and eating cake and cookies. mmm
The three dancing princesses! These girls spent the whole weekend dressing up as princesses, trading dresses, crowns, and shoes. Sweet.

How cute is Alex?!Thomas and Theodore playing Battleship. A rare quiet moment. Thomas and his cousins get along really well together and it is so nice to see them spend time with each other. Thomas had a super-fun time with Theodore and Benedict, having sword fights, making a lot of noise with hammers (there were a few squished plastic soldiers) and running around the back yard with capes on.
Dominic & Irina, thank you so much for having us over. We had a great time. It was also nice to meet Irina's cousin Thea, her husband, Ron, and their three boys. We had a really nice dinner together the first night we were there. Why didn't I get any pictures?!
Dominic and Gregory went sailing in a race on Saturday, which was very exciting from what the guys said. Gregory loved it......no...we don't need a sail boat!
Too bad I forgot my camera on Sunday as we went to a lovely Byzantine Catholic mass. It was beautiful. After church we went out for pizza, (the eggplant one was so good) before heading home. Here is Grace playing at the ferry terminal in Vancouver.
Cin-Cin.
Tom.
