The desk

I bought an old desk for Felicity ($15.00 at Salvation Army) and have spent the past 3 days, painting it. I don't really have a good before picture, but Mary said it was the ugliest desk she had ever seen. It is a metal desk with fake wood (formica?) on the top & on the drawers. The desk was from a gov't office.
Mary took this photo of me, sanding/cleaning the desk before painting it. Too bad you can't tell how awful it really looked. I bought it because it is big enough for her computer, with lots of extra space, and the drawers are quite spacious. Also, the chrome legs are cool.
All done. After all the painting was done, I covered the top with some self adhesive paper - the kind you can line your cupboards with. The paper is neat, it looks like leather. It would have been impossible to put the paper on properly without Mary's help. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mary Margaret!
The front of the drawers are decorated with some neat stickers. I was going to do some freehand painting, or stenciling, but this looks great, and Felicity can change it up any time she wants to.
A side view of the desk. I ordered a piece of glass for the top of the desk, so Felicity can put her poems, or pictures, or whatever on the top of her desk (under the glass). She can change it up anytime, and add to the desk, like a scrapbook. I hope Felicity likes it. She is in Vancouver with Eva right now, and hasn't seen it yet. The girls will be home on Saturday. Yay!

tonight's menu

We had a very nice dinner tonight. I made a tabbouleh salad, avocados with a caper dressing, pan-fried pork chops, and bread & tzaziki. We couldn't grill the meat as there wasn't any propane left for the BBQ, but Gregory deglazed the pan (with orange juice & white wine) that I had cooked the pork in, so we had a delicious sauce as well. It was great.
Greg said the tabbouleh salad was the best, so here's how I made it:
first I cooked 1/3 cup of couscous in 2/3 cups boiling water (I added chicken bouillon, but you could just add salt for a vegetarian version) add 1 tsp olive oil to water. When the water boils, cover the pot, remove from heat and let sit for 5 mins. fluff it up with a fork.
In a large bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup of olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic, crushed,(1 would be fine), and the juice of 2 lemons. This will be the dressing. Oh, add pepper & salt, too.
You will need 1 cup each of the following;
tomatoes, cucumber, green onion and parsley. Also at least 1/2 cup mint. All chopped finely.
Toss veggies, herbs & couscous all together with the dressing in the large bowl.
Transfer to a smaller serving bowl and refrigerate. Serve cold. This salad is very refreshing on a hot summer evening.

What in the name of Hello Kitty did I just drink

Gregory was given a bottle of 'Bainiangudu', which is a Chinese Liquor of some sort. Of course I had to take a shot of it. Whoa! Please... please... never.. do this! Ever. Seriously.
After all my strange facial and full body twitching ended, Gregory passed me the bottle of 'Bainiangudu' so I could read the back of the label.
This is how it starts:
"Bainiangudu is made from sweet spring water and collects various kinds of technology...."
Um... I like technology and all, but I'm not too sure it should be bottled and/or consumed in any way. Apparently 'Bainiangudu' means 'hundred years loneliness' and "Afterwards, it can make people feel generous, melancholy, mer-rier and sadder."

Happy birthday, Mary Margaret.

Mary Margaret is 11 years old. Wow.
Here is Mary about to open her presents. Greg & I always set the gifts out on the table in the night, so the birthday girl/boy, gets to see them first thing in the morning. Mary's Grama took her on a shopping trip and then out for lunch.
Tatabun & Uncle Peter came over for dinner. Gregory made a fantastic risotto, and basa fish in a caper sauce. It was so good. For dessert I made a vanilla cake with fresh lemon curd filling, and whipped cream frosting.
This is the cake I made for Mary's b-day party with her friends, which was a couple days after her actual birthday.
Make a wish!

Happy birthday, Grace

Grace turned 6 years old in August 13th. To celebrate, the kids & I went to see the movie Ratatouille. Happy birthday, Grace!
After the movie we met up with Dad for dinner at the Macaroni Grill. The waitress sang 'Happy Birthday' in Italian. It was very beautiful.
Sisters
We had to spend a couple nights at Greg's dad's house because our place had a little problem with ants (ew). Actually, we had a blast at Tatabun's. It was so fun with the kids sleeping everywhere!
Thomas slept under Uncle Peter's desk. Comfy, Tom?
Trinity slept in the closet, which she called her 'own room'.
Grace was on the floor and Greg & I got the bed. The other girls all slept in the living room.

Trinity's clock tower

Beautiful building blocks, Baby.Peek-a-boo. Trinity looks through her 'clock tower'.
Oops.
Trinity's tower tumbled to the table.
Alliteration is fun.

roses and rainbows

I took some of the kids to the park after dinner. I think the kids had some fun, but I was in a bit of a funk, and had a splitting headache. I was sort of hoping to enjoy myself anyway, but the kids started getting cold, I hardly got any good shots of the children, and to top it all off, I bumped the top of my head on a piece of playground equipment. ***ouch!*** I guess every day can't be filled with roses and rainbows.
Yum, ice cream!
Oh, Mary, you are too cute.

Grace on the monkey bars. Keep going, Gracie!

Potatoes

The kids really wanted a garden this year. That sounded like a lot of extra work for me, but I did have some old potatoes in the kitchen, so I handed them to Eva, not really knowing what (if anything) would happen. Well, Eva & Thomas worked so hard on their potato patch. The ground is so rocky & overgrown with weeds ; I was so impressed with their determination. They were pretty good at watering, too. Here are Thomas & Eva with the fruits of their labour. The potatoes were so good, tossed in butter and fresh parsley.mmm. Thanks, Thomas & Eva.

Putting on a show

Mary Margaret was in a drama camp called 'Putting on a Show'. The theme for the week that Mary was there was 'rock & roll'. At the end of the week, the parents are invited to watch the show. It was a really good performance for the kids. Very fun & enjoyable.

Bravo, Mary!

I heart Tofino

We had a wonderful family vacation in Tofino. This was our Christmas present from my mum. Thank you so much, Mum, we love you. The kids look forward to our trip to Tofino all year.Cin-Cin, Grace & I are playing inside the cabin.
This is such a cool picture of Gregory & his little Sweetie-- check out the reflection in Greg's sunglasses.
This was such a yummy dinner. Steak, red pepper, mushrooms, (all cooked on the bar-B-Q) with a salad & garlic bread. **drool**
We played Frisbee on the grass in front of our cabin and ate outside just about every night.
You can walk for hours on the beach.
We love to go exploring and check out all the sea life. Here is a little tidal pool with starfish, sea anemones and all sorts of different sea weed.
Mary Margaret has a starfish.
Hey, so does Grace!
Cin-Cin, Grace, Felicity & Heather. We are just about to explore "Tunnel Island"
***awwww***

Heather & Bunny.
Here is a mama bear and her baby cub behind her. I spotted the baby bear (*cuteness*) as we were heading home and we turned around to take a picture. They are right by the side of the road. We also saw a bear on the way there.

Tunnel Island

A few years ago the kids discovered a super cool place on the beach in Tofino and named it "Tunnel Island". A series of paths wind under huge tree roots which are the "tunnels". The paths lead up to cliffs overlooking the ocean. A very cool place to explore.
